Why pattern repeat wastes rolls

Plain wallpaper is simple: you divide the wall by the roll and round up. A pattern changes the maths because every drop has to line up with the last, so you lose up to a full repeat's length off each drop as waste. A large repeat can cut the number of usable drops per roll from four down to three, pushing your roll count up sharply. That's why the match type is the most important choice in this calculator.

Always buy a spare roll

Wallpaper is made in batches and colour can vary subtly between them. Running short mid-job and buying a fresh roll from a different batch is the classic way to end up with a visible mismatch, so this tool automatically adds one spare from the same batch.

Frequently asked questions

How many rolls for a standard room?

A typical 4m x 3m room at 2.4m height needs around 6–7 rolls of standard UK wallpaper with no pattern repeat, and more with a large repeat. This calculator adjusts for your exact walls and match type.

What is a half-drop match?

It's a pattern where the design only lines up when the next strip is dropped by half a repeat, which increases waste. Select the large/half-drop option to allow for it, and always check the roll label for the repeat figure.

Should I deduct doors and windows?

For small openings it's safer not to, because you still need full drops above and below them. Only reduce the wall length for very large openings like patio doors or wide bays.
