Don't forget the adhesive and grout
Tiles are the headline cost, but the adhesive and grout are what people forget until they're standing at the till. As a rough guide, a 20kg bag of adhesive covers about 4 m² at a standard bed depth, and a 5kg bag of grout covers roughly 5 m² with typical joint widths. Large-format tiles and uneven walls both increase adhesive use, so treat these as minimums.
Cutting allowance matters
Every tiled area needs spare tiles for cuts around edges, and for breakages during fitting and afterwards. Ten percent is standard for a simple rectangular room; increase it to fifteen for diagonal layouts, lots of cuts, or if you want to keep matching spares for future repairs.
Frequently asked questions
How many tiles do I need per square metre?
It depends entirely on tile size — nine 30x30cm tiles cover about 0.81 m², while one large 60x60cm tile covers 0.36 m². Enter your tile dimensions and the calculator works out the count including waste.
How much adhesive and grout will I use?
As a starting point, one 20kg bag of adhesive per 4 m² and one 5kg bag of grout per 5 m². Bigger tiles, wider joints and uneven surfaces all use more, so round up.
What waste allowance should I use?
Ten percent suits most straight-laid rooms. Go to fifteen percent for diagonal or herringbone patterns, small rooms with lots of cuts, or when you want spare tiles from the same batch for repairs.
