Woodwork paint goes further than you think

Gloss, satinwood and eggshell are applied in thin coats and cover well — often 14–16 m² per litre — so a little goes a long way. The mistake most people make is buying a full 2.5-litre tin for a job that needs less than a litre. This calculator converts skirting runs and door counts into an honest area so you buy the right small tin.

Primer and knots

Bare or new wood needs priming first, and any knots need knotting solution or they'll bleed through the topcoat. Those are separate products from your gloss, so remember them when you're pricing the job even though they're not in the paint total here.

Frequently asked questions

How much gloss do I need for skirting?

Skirting is deceptively small in area — 30 metres of 15cm skirting is only about 4.5 m², so under a litre for two coats. A single 750ml tin is often enough for a whole room's woodwork.

Can I use the same paint on doors and skirting?

Yes, gloss, satinwood and eggshell all suit skirting, frames and doors. Satinwood and eggshell are more popular now for their softer sheen and because they show brush marks and dust less than full gloss.

Do I need undercoat?

On bare wood, yes — primer or undercoat helps the topcoat adhere and cover. Over existing sound paint of a similar colour you can often go straight to topcoats, which is why coat count matters here.
