DIY vs Hiring a Tradesperson: When It's Worth It

Doing it yourself saves money but costs time and carries risk. Here's how to decide, job by job, whether to pick up the tools or pick up the phone.

When DIY makes sense

Painting, wallpapering, laying laminate, simple decking and basic tiling are all within reach of a confident DIYer with time to spare. The savings are real — labour often equals or exceeds the material cost — and the results can be excellent with patience and preparation.

When to hire a pro

Anything involving gas, electrics or structural work should go to a qualified professional — it's a legal and safety matter, not just a quality one. Plastering, complex tiling and big landscaping jobs are also where a pro's speed and finish usually justify the cost.

Count the real cost of DIY

DIY isn't free. Tools, your time, the risk of mistakes and the cost of putting them right all count. A botched job that a professional has to redo costs more than hiring one in the first place. Be honest about your skill level and the time you actually have.
